Today we’re going to explore southern Utah, home of some of the most amazing rock formations on Earth. If you’ve never been to this portion of Utah, it wouldn’t surprise me to hear that when you arrive, you’ll think you’re in a Roadrunner/Wile E Coyote cartoon! The only thing missing is your trusty ACME catalogue full of bank safes, anvils, giant rubber bands, and rocket shoes!

Today let’s pretend we’re headed up I-15 from Las Vegas, and we left Las Vegas with savings intact so there’s no need to have a temporary address in Mesquite, NV or St George, UT while we work for some gas money. Haaa! Anyhow the drive from Vegas to Cedar City, UT goes through some beautiful desert, past Lake Mead, up into the first of the Red Cliffs. To the west of the interstate is the aptly named Red Cliffs National Conservation Area, to the east of the interstate is Zion National Park (reached by heading east on Hwy 9).

As we near Cedar City, UT you can turn right on Hwy 99 to reach Dixie National Forest, or continue north on I-15 until you reach I-70 north of Beaver, UT. When you head east on I-70 you’ll pass through Fish Lake National Forest and Manti-La Sal National Forest on your way to Hwy 191, which heads south into Moab, Arches National Park, and down to either Canyonlands National Park or on to Monument Valley and the Four Corners area. From this portion of the drive you can head down to Arizona, or over to New Mexico and Colorado.
