Y’all, it’s so HUMID and rainy and floody and tropical stormy here in Houston that I can’t help but think about some of those drier prettier places that Oregon has going on right now. Don’t get me wrong, I love Houston, I love Harris County, I love Texas, BUT… I tell you what, I like a little Oregon every now and then. And since we’re going to escape from the wet for a couple minutes during this blog, we’re not going to be talking about Oregon West-of-the-Cascades, we’re going to be discussing high desert Oregon that’s Out East.

If you have any interest in the Old West, or visiting a part of America that is very reminiscent of a slower paced America you might remember from growing up, then eastern Oregon is the place to visit. And since we’re trying to escape the heat as well, today we’re going to talk about one of America’s least known Alpine playgrounds, the Wallowa Mountains in Northeastern Oregon.

The Wallowas are a BEAUTIFUL range of Alpine mountains situated in northeast Oregon. You can take a gondola form Lake Wallowa up to the crest of Mt Howard and see all the way past Hell’s Canyon into Idaho. It is so gorgeous up there, and peaceful. All you’ll hear is the birds and the wind. It is a perfect spot to just relax your shoulders and ease all those burdens off yourself.

The Wallowas were home to the Nez Perce and Chief Joseph, and began being settled by folks coming in from the East back in the 1870s. So you’re looking at a portion of the country that has only been fairly recently settled by “civilization”, so if you’re looking to get away from most of it, if not all of it then a week in the Wallowas would be your cup of tea. The local folks start complaining when humidity rises about 30% and heat about 80 (wink wink) so for us Harris County folk, it’s ideal! And as always, swing by and say howdy to us over at the website before you hit the road!
