Back in the day, folks used to get dressed up on a Saturday night and head to town to hit the dance hall and kick up a little dust to their favorite music. More than one kid spent a little of Saturday night wondering when Mom and Dad were gonna get tired of dancing and head on home. Times are different now. With TV and The Internet, folks don’t seem to head out for their entertainment as much as they used to, most folks find their entertainment closer to home these days. BUT, for those of y’all that still enjoy that night out on the town there are still some mighty fine old-school dance halls scattered across the state, and we’re going to introduce a couple of them to you here.

One of the most famous and the self-proclaimed Oldest Dance Hall in Texas is of course in Gruene, TX just outside New Braunfels on I-35. Gruene Hall is a world famous, old style, un-air conditioned Texas dance hall. So if you want to scoot those boots across a wood floor the way your folks used to, you gotta visit Gruene Hall, the music is always good, doesn’t matter who’s playing.

Just up I-35 from  New Braunfels is the Capitol Of The Fine State Of Texas, Austin. On South Lamar in Austin is one of that famous music town’s most enduring dance halls: The Broken Spoke. Featuring low ceilings and a wide dance floor, The Broken Spoke has hosted almost any name in country music you’d care to mention from Willie and Waylon to the late great Don Walser.

If you drive north of the river in Austin on Lamar, you’ll need to scoot a block west on 45th street, or so, to Burnet Rd. and head north a couple more blocks to a building that looks like an old church called Jinney’s Little Longhorn. If you go on a Sunday afternoon, you can play their world famous “Chicken Sh!t Bingo” and possibly win $100 after the chickens do their thing on a big bingo board, all the while dancing to pure Texas honky tonk country.

If these old school venues don’t restore some of your faith in live music and leaving the comfort of your internet and AC for a night on the town, well…we’re always glad to see you at PPL Motorhomes.com!
