Lake Tahoe is one of those other-worldly beautiful places. It’s America’s second deepest lake behind Crater Lake up in Oregon, it’s America’s sixth largest lake behind the five Great lakes, and it is considered an alpine lake because it lives at 6,225′ elevation. The lake is largely surrounded by National Forest which should ensure that the lake will remain a natural beauty for generations to enjoy. As a passionate RV’r I’m also glad to report that you can drive and camp almost entirely around the lake!

Depending on where you’re traveling from, Tahoe can be reached easily from Sacramento California in the west, Reno Nevada from the north, Carson City Nevada from the east, or any number of mountain roads from the south. If you travel to the Lake along I-80 between Sacramento and Reno you can take Hwy 89 south to the lake or 267, either of which T intersect at the lakes shore. The lake is home to most outdoor activities you’d like to participate in from snow skiing in the winter to all the summertime things that are so fun: hiking, camping, exploring, bicycling, fishing, boating, scenic photography, parasailing, jet skiing, kayaking, paddle boarding, and even scuba diving. On the Nevada side of the lake, there are plenty of casino-related indoor activities to partake in as well if that’s your thing. The classic Calneva casino is still in operation and might be Nevada’s oldest legal casino, and I believe Frank Sinatra even owned it briefly back in the 1960’s.

Those of you who are old enough to remember the TV show Bonanza will recognize a lot of the scenery around Lake Tahoe, as the show was filmed on location at the Ponderosa Ranch which is located on the Nevada side of the lake. The Ponderosa shut it’s doors for the last time in 2004 after being sold to developers. Tahoe is an incredibly beautiful destination and we can’t commend it highly enough.
