There’s no need to hunker by the fire in Texas all winter long, we have our cold snaps of course but we are blessed with fairly mild winters here in the southern portion on the state. Because of that we’re also blessed with the opportunity to enjoy this fine state all year long. I realize there are folks who figure that a bad day fishing out in the cold is better than a day with no fishing at all, and I also reckon quite a few of them have RVs and fish year-round. So today, I thought I’d remind some of the native Texans and introduce some of you out-of-staters of some killer fishing in Texas where it’s warm enough to say it’s cold in quotations only, as in: folks, it’s “cold” down here!
Texas has quite a few lakes that are used as cooling water for power plants which subsequently helps keep the water temperature higher during the winter months and allowing fishermen to chase bass, crappie, red drum, and catfish. Some of the lakes are:
- Lake Fayette – north of Hwy 71 in between La Grange, TX and Fayetteville, TX
- Lake Calaveras – southeast of San Antonio just north of Hwy 181
- Victor Braunig Lake – south of San Antonio, accessible from I-37
- Lake Arlington – in Dallas Metroplex, east of 820
- Coleto Creek Reservoir – hwy 59 southwest of Victoria, TX
And of course there’s always Falcon Reservoir, which is about 40 miles southeast of Laredo, TX on the Texas/Mexico border. The best way to get there is to take I-35 south until it ends in Laredo, then take Hwy 83 south to Zapata, TX. Falcon Reservoir is famous throughout Texas for monster bass, alligator gar, and unfortunately the piracy back in 2010. The Texas DPS has established such a visible presence, complete with gunboats, since 2010 that Falcon is considered one of the securest parks in Texas so fish away!
