Best of Texas?

I know with a headline like that, it’s bound to cause some raised eyebrows because it’s pretty open to interpretation and everybody has their preferences, but I thought I’d list a few places within a common geographic area that can all be visited from one home base AND not be up to the side-awning in traffic. So for today’s exercise, we’ll be based out of Alpine, Texas, deep in the trans-Pecos region at the north end of Big Bend Country.

Alpine is the county seat of Brewster County, TX, which is famous for being so big you could fit Delaware inside it three times, or you could stuff the state of Connecticut inside the Brewster County and still have 500 square miles left over. Also known as the home of Sul Ross Univeristy, Alpine offers amenities and food the likes of which you might not expect in far west Texas. There are the usual fast food places of course, as well as some fine Mexican and Italian cuisine. If live music is your thing, stop in at Railroad Blues, Crystal Bar, or the Saddle Club.

Just north of Alpine is historic Fort Davis. From 1854 to 1891, Fort Davis was an active cavalry fort. During the height of expansion during the old west, Buffalo Soldiers would ride out of Fort Davis in pursuit of Geronimo. These days, Fort Davis is a sleepy town filled with history and good food! The National Park Service maintains the old cavalry fort in its current condition with a few buildings restored back to their condition during the fort’s heydays.

To the west of Alpine is Marfa, a former railroad town and now thriving art community. World renowned as a center for minimalist art, Marfa is also home to the Marfa Lights, strange ghostly lights that have been observed near US 67 sporadically throughout the years. Also rather famously outside town is the Prada Store, a full scale mockup of a store selling high end Italian shoes situated by itself in the desert outside town.
